Abstract

The Forty-Second Annual Meeting of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons was held at McCormick Place in Chicago, January 30–February 1, 2006, with an attendance of almost 4,500, including spouses and exhibitors. A total of 1,219 members and 1,110 guest physicians attended the Scientific Sessions. The program this year greatly increased attendance at the second STS University, which featured four didactic courses, seven wet labs, five live surgical procedures, and a video demonstration. More than 700 participants attended STS University for hands-on training in adult cardiac, general thoracic, and congenital cardiac procedures. The Monday morning General Scientific Session featured the presentation of three J. Maxwell Chamberlain Memorial Papers: “Determinants of Left Ventricular Dysfunction After Anatomic Repair of Congenitally Corrected Transposition of the Great Arteries,” “Long-Term Results from the National Emphysema Treatment Trial,” and “Stent-Grafting of the Thoracic Aorta by the Cardiothoracic Surgeon.” A variety of other educational opportunities were also available this year, including the Parallel Surgical Forums, Patient Safety Town Hall Meeting, Cardiothoracic Surgeons in the Military Program, Women in Thoracic Surgery 20th Anniversary Meeting, Surgical Motion Pictures, Meet the Experts Sessions, and the Tuesday Breakfast Sessions. Of particular note were three highly motivating presentations: the Presidential Address, the Thomas B. Ferguson Lecture, and the Medical Ethics Debate. In his Presidential Address “Navigating the New ‘Flat World’ of Cardiothoracic Surgery,” Dr Sidney Levitsky discussed how competition from abroad and the pressures of improving the bottom line are affecting medicine as they have the business world. Dr David Taggart, the Thomas B. Ferguson Lecturer, reviewed the data that demonstrated the actual outcomes patients have experienced after CABG and after stent placement. His presentation highlighted the importance of patients being fully informed before making a treatment decision since the data demonstrates that in a majority of cases, CABG is the best treatment for multivessel and left main disease. There was also a presentation by doctors who survived Hurricane Katrina, sharing their thoughts on emergency preparation. These presentations, along with many other sessions from the STS 42nd Annual Meeting, are available on the STS website at www.sts.org. The success of the Annual Meeting was due in large part to the exemplary commitment of the Workforce on Annual Meeting (Program Task Force) under the leadership of John V. Conte, MD (Program Task Force Chair), W. Randolph Chitwood Jr, MD (Tech-Con Task Force Chair), Joseph A. Forbess, MD, John C. Wain, MD (Surgical Forums Co-Chairs), and Michael J. Mack, MD, and Richard H. Feins, MD (STS University Task Force). In addition, the Workforce on Aging, under the leadership of Joseph LoCicero, MD, and the Workforce on Practice Education, under the leadership of Robert E. Emory, MD, created dynamic parallel sessions. Before the STS Annual Meeting, the 2006 STS/AATS Tech-Con meeting welcomed 976 registrants. Once again, this program highlighted the newest and most crucial technological advances affecting cardiothoracic surgery. The following officers were elected at the annual Business Meeting: Frederick L. Grover, President; John E. Mayer, Jr, First Vice President; W. Randolph Chitwood Jr, Second Vice President; Douglas E. Wood, Secretary; Douglas J. Mathisen, Treasurer; Carolyn E. Reed, Treasurer-Elect; W. Gerald Rainer, Historian. Richard H. Feins was elected Director-at-Large. L. Henry Edmunds, Jr was re-elected as Editor. A complete listing of officers, committee members, council operating board and workforce members, and society representatives follows this report. The Society extends its appreciation to retiring officers and committee and workforce members for their dedicated service. Members also elected 131 Active, 36 International, and 46 Candidate Members this year. The total membership for the Society is composed of more than 5,000 members. Also this year, Mark Ferguson, MD, and Constantine Mavroudis, MD, co-chaired the Local Arrangements Committee, and Mrs Ferguson and Mrs Mavroudis chaired the Spouse’s Hospitality Committee. The Society thanks Dr and Mrs Ferguson and Dr and Mrs Mavroudis for their exemplary work planning the various social activities associated with the meeting. The Members’ Social Event was held at Art Institute of Chicago on Tuesday evening, January 31, 2006. The 43rd Annual Meeting will be held January 29–31, 2007, in San Diego, California. Frederick L.
