Abstract
In the summer of 1995 the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences moves from Wormley, where it has been for 40 years, to newly built premises at Southampton forming, with the University's Departments of Geology and Oceanography, the Southampton Oceanography Centre. This article reviews the Institute's history, major achievements, and aspirations.
