Abstract

This article is concerned with the development of semiconductor thermoelements during the past four years. The determination of the figure of merit in terms of the fundamental properties (mobility, effective mass and lattice thermal conductivity) is discussed. Better understanding of electrical and thermal transport in solids and improved semiconductor technology have made available materials with sufficiently high figure of merit to suggest that the application of thermoelectric generators and refrigerators may be a practical possibility.
