Abstract
ED NOTE: This item has a rather unusual format for Fortran Forum. It is an outgrowth of an E-mail discussion between Kent Paul Dolan of ODU and Presley Smith of Convex Computer Corp. Kent sent a note, and Presley sent a rather negative reply. What we now see is Presley's reply, somewhat edited by Kent and interspersed with Kent's counter-reply. After sending this message to Presley, Kent decided to post it on the USENET notes system. Carl Burch of Hewlett Packard picked it up and distributed it at the X3J3 meeting in February 1988. I saw a copy in the X3J3 distribution mailing, and asked Carl for a cleaner copy to publish in Fortran Forum.
