Abstract

The publication of the comprehensive Italian handbook of Latin palaeography by P. Cherubini and A. Pratesi (Paleografia latina. L’avventura grafica del mondo occidentale, Città del Vaticano 2010) provides the opportunity in the course of a review to trace the development of Latin palaeography in recent decades. The reviewer deals above all with the handwriting of books up to the end of the Middle Ages, and not only presents the results of recent research but also points out the lacunae. Finally, he poses the question of the future of palaeography.
