Abstract

Although problem formulation is a crucial element of any research project it is often neglected in scientific research methods literature. In the evaluation field and in researcher-practitioner partnerships in social work research, problem formulation has a specific place. Using two dichotomized variables, the type of evaluation and the origin of the problem, a typology is developed in order to identify theoretical varieties of problem formulation instances. The typology is discussed in the light of a number of program evaluation standards and research on the new mode of knowledge production. It is concluded that empirical descriptions of problem formulation in evaluation in the context of researcher-practitioner partnerships are needed.
