Abstract

History and Clinical Signs : Abortions are usually sporadic and occur in the last trimester of pregnancy. Neither prodromal nor post abortion signs are common in the aborting cow. Gross Lesions : Autolysis of fetal tissues is common. Purulent placentitis is a consistent but not pathognomonic lesion. Fibrinous pericarditis, pleuritis or peritonitis occur less frequently. Microscopic Lesions : Purulent placentitis with associated small, Gram positive coccobacilli is a consistent lesion. Purulent bronchopneumonia associated with such organisms is a common but not consistent lesion. Cultural Procedures : Corynebacterium pyogenes may be isolated from most of the fetal tissues but there may be fewer contaminants in the stomach contents. The organism is isolated most consistently from the placenta. Serologic Procedures : No standardized serologic tests are available for C. pyogenes . Preferred Diagnostic Methods : 1. 1. Isolation of C. pyogenes from the placenta or other fetal tissues, and subsequent identification of the organism by morphologic and biochemical characteristics. 2. 2. Histologic demonstration of C. pyogenes with purulent placentitis, purulent bronchopneumonia or both.
