Abstract
The ambiguities and instabilities connected with lack of completeness in the experiments used to obtain phase shifts for the processes ππ → ππ, ππ → K K , K K → K K in the medium-energy range are analysed, particularly in connection with scalar resonances. It is shown that (A) multibody processes like ππ → 4 π, and (B) the influence of the channel K K → K K are greater than what is usually speculated. Possible remedies are also discussed.
