Abstract

A sample of 6665 annihilations of the type p(at rest)p → π +π −π +π − is analyzed. Mass and angular distributions are given. A maximum-likelihood analysis is made which uses interferring Bose-symmetrized amplitudes to parametrize the reaction in terms of final-state 2 π and 3 π interactions. The dominant final state from 1S 0 annihilations is A 2 ± π ∓, where the A 2 observed has M + 1335 ± 15 MeV, J P = 2 + and a decay A 2 → ϱπ. The important final states from 3S 1 annihilations are ϱππ(s-wave ππ) and ϱ 0f 0. There is evidence for structure in the ( I=0, J=0) ππ system.
