Abstract
11 B and 89 Y MAS NMR spectra at room temperature and magnetization in the temperature range (2–300 K) were measured on a powder specimen of Y B 4. The three different 11 B Knight shifts (34.7, 12.6 and 5.4 ppm) for the crystallographic sites B1(4e), B2(4h) and B3(8j), respectively, were observed in a magnetic field of 17.6 T. The 89 Y isotropic Knight shift (294.6 ppm) and K x x , K y y and K z z components of the Knight shift tensor have been determined. The spin–lattice relaxation times, T 1 ( 11 B ) = 4.5 s and T 1 ( 89 Y ) = 5.5 s , were measured at room temperature. Analysis of the magnetization data have indicated that Y B 4 is a diamagnetic compound with the temperature independent component of its magnetic susceptibility equal to − 5.9 ∗ 1 0 − 9 ( m 3 / kg ) . Some of these data were referred to those of CaB 4 − x C x ( x = 0.21 ) , LaB 4 , NdB 4 and Y 5 Si 2 B 8 .
