Abstract
AbstractBesides being a monument of universal literary rank, the Shāhnāma is also a repository of valuable data on Iranian history and culture, an important source of information on social institutions, education, moral priorities, mode of life, economic activities, folk beliefs, rituals and customs, mythology, military ethics, etc. of the inhabitants of Ērānšahr during the early Islamic—and even the late Sasanian—period. The paper presents a review of the forms of killing and torture—as measures of punishing enemies, or as acts of evil conduct—described by Firdousī in his masterpiece.
