Abstract

In 2014, Boston Public Library (BPL) partnered with Boston Bikes to create Bibliocycle—a unique bicycle-powered mobile outreach service to bring books and other library services to Bostonians throughout the city. Using bikes and a bicycle trailer, Bibliocycle was designed and built by Boston resident, architect and cyclist Jon Ramos. Bibliocycle is staffed by BPL staff members on a voluntary, self-selecting basis. Most of the riders are librarians, but the authors also have some library support staff who participate in the programme. Staff members schedule Bibliocycle visits much as they would other outreach visits, and largely work events that take place during their regular work hours. A bicycle is a very agile mode of transportation, and can travel to places most motorised vehicles cannot, such as park interiors, the inside of buildings and museum grounds.
