Abstract
The thermodynamical reduction behaviour of LiNbO 3:Ti and LiNbO 3:Ti, Fe crystals has been investigated. It has been shown that under appropriate reduction conditions, an optical absorption band at ∼1.8 eV is generated. Its intensity is proportional to the height of an EPR signal previously associated to Ti 3+ and it is proposed to correspond to the 2T→ 2E transition of this ion. The spectral location of the band is consistent with a weak crystal field for LiNbO 3 in comparison to Al 2O 3. For the double-doped (Ti+Fe) samples, it has been concluded that iron reduces more easily than Titanium. Moreover, this impurity does not influence the reduction behaviour of iron.
