Abstract

A study on the formation of the benzyl radical by photolysis of toluene in a benzene host at 77 and 4.2 K is presented. The analysis of the dependence of the radical product yield upon irradiation light intensity proves that the radical formation reaction is unimolecular and biphotonic via the lowest excited triplet state of the toluene molecule.
