Abstract

The Σ-hypernuclear production by the in-flight 4He(K −, π −) reaction is investigated in the framework of a DWIA Green function treatment. A complex nucleus-Σ potential is derived from a realistic ΣN interaction; its real part is repulsive near the nuclear centre, which suppresses the ΣN→ΛN conversion. The resultant formation spectrum at P K−=450MeV/c exhibits a narrow peak below the Σ-emission threshold. This in-flight experiment is expected to provide more definitive information on the structure of the σ4He hypernucleus than the stopped K − experiment done at KEK.
