Abstract

A series of sodium cluster ions, such as Na+(NaCl)n, Na+(HCOONa)n and Na+(HCOONa)n1(CH3COONa)n2, were observed in electrospray mass spectrometry. These results support the electrophoretic separation mechanism for excess ions at droplet surface, and the charged residue model for gas phase ion formation from highly-charged droplets.
