Abstract

Planar magnetron-injection gun forming a powerful (3 MW) sheet helical electron beam (HEB) for 140 GHz gyrotron was designed. Modified scheme of an electron beam analyzer based on the retarding electric field method was developed to measure the electron beam characteristics, including pitch-factor and velocity spread. Experimental results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions and demonstrate feasibility of formation of a wide (20 mm) sheet HEB with an energy of 100 keV, a current of 30 A and a pitch-factor of above 1.2 – 1.3.
