Abstract

We studied the formation of the domain structure as a result of the motion of a planar interphase boundary in the {001}-cut tetragonal PMN-PT crystals during cooling with oriented temperature gradient. The specialized heating/cooling stage was assembled for this purpose. Piezoresponse force microscopy was used to image the domain structure at the (001) and (010) surfaces of the samples with high spatial resolution, revealing a complex quasi-periodic domain pattern with a periodicity from 300 to 400 nm.
