Abstract

Two kinds of secondary twins have been formed in primary twins by applying tensile stress in thin films of silver and gold. The first kind is that the twinning plane K1 and the twinning shear η1 are both different between the primary and the secondary twins, which is found in vacuum deposited and {001} oriented, continuous silver films. The second kind is that the twinning plane K1 is common, but the twinning shear η1 is different between the two. This is found in {111} oriented, laminar colloidal gold micro-crystals. They are identified by electron microscopy and diffraction.
