Abstract

The interaction of CO, CO 2 and CH 3OH with stepped Rh field emitter surfaces was studied by pulsed field desorption mass spectrometry (PFDMS) at room temperature and pressures at or below 1.3 × 10 −4 Pa. During adsorption of these gases the PFD mass spectra contained, besides other species. CO + and Rh(CO) n+ x ions ( x = 1−3, n = 1. 2). It is concluded that Rh-subcarbonyls are produced in the surface layer, from the reaction of Rh step sites and CO ad formed immediately during adsorption of gaseous CO or after either CH 3OH or CO 2 decomposition. Coadsorbed oxygen and hydrogen, released during the decomposition reactions, did not prevent Rh(CO) x formation.
