Abstract

Nickel(II) cyanomethyl complex bearing a tridentate bulky mesoionic carbene ligand was synthesized by the reaction of nickel(II) chloride with K3PO4 in acetonitrile, and it was also formed from dicationic acetonitrile complex. Nickel(II) hydroxo complex is revealed to be an intermediate to give the cyanomethyl complex from both compounds, indicating that the N-bound acetonitrile complex is not deprotonated. Theoretical studies indicated a new mechanism in the cyanomethyl formation.
