Abstract

A novel structure model of diffusion layer of coated cutting tools is proposed. Equations of effective thermal conductivity for diffusion layer and equivalent layer are derived by using analytical methods of Maxwll-Eucken1 model,Series model and multilayer equivalent model. The value of the effective thermal conductivity of a specific coated cutting tool is calculated by using the new model. Temperature values of cutting tools with and without consideration of the diffusion layer are obtained by using finite element method. Results reveal that the calculated temperature with the new model is more accurate than the conventional one comparing with measured temperature. The new method can help the choice and design of coated tools with more accurate theoretical for manufacturing industries.
