Abstract
This paper is primarily concerned with metallic diffusion coatings for the protection of iron and steel. Special reference is made to the physicochemical factors determining which metals are able to form diffusion coaiings, the methods of application available, and the nature of the alloy coatings thus formed. The present paper is part 1 of a three part series: part 2 will deal with ‘Theoretical considerations’ and part 3 with ‘Aluminium, chromium, and zinc coatings’.
