W. Abstract Exact solutions have been obtained previously for the emergent intensities of two or more spectral lines that are coupled together by sharing a common upper level. Here, simple approximate solutions for the ith component are presented in terms of H( , xi), the H-functions of isotropic scattering for a weighted mean albedo (N) for the whole multiplet. A table facilitating the calculation of H(N, x > 1) is given, since H-functions with x > 1 are required in the approximation. For the case of a moderately inhomogeneous atmosphere, where varies with depth, an approximate solution is given in terms of H(N , x1), the H-functions for an equivalent homogeneous atmosphere with an effective mean albedo of Ne . ., an albedo that is weighted not only by the relative component strengths, but by the run of N through the atmosphere as well.
