Abstract

The diffuse reflection from a semi-infinite, plane-parallel, homogeneous atmosphere for arbitrary single scattering albedo may be computed if the reflection functions for n-times scattered radiation are known in the conservative case. Rapid convergence is obtained by utilizing asymptotic expressions for the higher order scattering. Tables of these nth order reflection functions are presented for isotropic scattering and for two phase functions representative of clouds and hazes. The necessary relations for computation of the shape and equivalent width of absorption lines formed in a scattering atmosphere are also presented.
