Abstract

Glass forming region of B 2O 3–La 2O 3–ZnO system was investigated and the influence of ZnO, La 2O 3 and B 2O 3 on the transition temperature ( T g) and the coefficient of the thermal expansion of glasses ( α) from the ternary system was examined by differential thermal analysis (DTA) and the thermal expansion measurement. This study shows that the effects of B 2O 3, ZnO and La 2O 3 are significantly different. Increasing B 2O 3 content led to the increase of T g and the decrease of α. When ZnO content was increased, T g decreased dramatically, but α kept almost unchanged. T g and α increased when La 2O 3 content was added. When B 2O 3–La 2O 3–ZnO glasses were as sintering aids for low temperature co-fired ceramics, it is important that the thermal properties of the glasses were understood and controlled to meet some compatibility requirement.
