Abstract

The formability and magnetocaloric response of the amorphous Fe88La7-xCexB5 (x = 0, 1, 3, 5, 7) alloys were studied in this work. When the alloys were prepared into ribbons with a thickness of ∼40 μm, only the Fe88La7-xCexB5 (x = 3, 5, 7) ribbons are fully amorphous and the best glass former is Fe88La2Ce5B5. The amorphous ribbons show rather high magnetic entropy change (−ΔSm) peak, while the Curie temperature of these ribbons decreases with the Ce addition. Based on these results, several amorphous hybrids with flattened −ΔSm profiles were designed. Among these, the hybrid composed of 45% (wt.%) Fe88Ce7B5, 3% (wt.%) Fe88La2Ce5B5 and 52% (wt.%) Fe86Ce7B5Co2 amorphous ribbons is considered to be a better candidate for the working materials of a domestic magnetic air conditioner.
