Abstract

Locally equilibrium thermodynamic model is developed to describe the formation and dissolution of the outer magnetite layer of an oxide film on the steel surface in contact with lead-bismuth eutectic. The model allows to predict the outer layer growth law as a function of dissolved oxygen and iron concentrations, temperature and coolant flow rate. Comparison with experiments allows to explain the phenomenon of magnetite dissolution in two experimentally observed cases: when oxygen concentration in LBE is above the solid magnetite stability line and under the high values of the coolant flow rate, without the consideration of mechanical erosion.
