Abstract

This publication covers the activities of societies in the North Caucasus in the pre-revolutionary period Political and economic changes led to social differentiation of society and set society and the state the task of social protection of the disadvantaged segments of the population. A comprehension of the historical experience of charitable activity in Russia provides an opportunity to create new forms and directions of material and spiritual assistance to the needy. The founders were representatives of the national intelligentsia, for whom activities in the societies became one of the forms of expressing civic initiative.
