Abstract

A moderate-sized washover fan generated by Hurricane Elena in 1985 on the barrier coast of west-central Florida was subsequently cut and reworked into a tidal inlet. The entire washover fan was initially above mean low water with little tidal circulation over it. After approximately one year this fan had been modified by tidal scouring into a tidal inlet with both flood and ebb tidal deltas. After nearly two years this inlet is over 2 m deep, carrying a tidal prism of 0.8 × 10 6 m 3, and is essentially stable.
