Abstract

This work presents a study on the Problem Solving methodology in the initial education of teachers of natural sciences, as well as the deepening of its pedagogical and methodological aspects. This research seeks to understand teachers’ weaknesses and strengths when implementing the methodology in elementary education. The data were collected in a university extension course at the Federal University of Pampa (Unipampa) with 7 teachers of Natural Sciences in initial and continuous education. To reach the objectives, the study identified and analyzed teachers’ difficulties and potential when implementing problems in the teaching context. The activities developed during the course, as well as the moments of group cooperation led those teachers to reflect on their practice and helped them improve other relevant abilities as teachers. Therefore, the results point out that the development of alternative teaching methodologies, such as the Problem Solving method, during teachers’ initial education contributes to their professional excellence.
