Abstract

The paper deals with a formant analysis of short vowels in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) language. The investigation aims to highlight similarities and differences in vowel quality in MSA. The vowels (/a/, /u/and /i/) were exracted from 565 speech files recorded by 163 Algerians that were belonging to six regions. Three formants (F1, F2 and F3) were computed from the data set of all the regions. Statistical analyses were conducted on formant values to show the variability depending on the regional accent and the gender of speakers. The outcomes indicate a significant effect of regional accent and gender of speakers in specific vowels.
