Abstract

In order to lay the groundwork for taking a comparative approach to the Homeric simile, this chapter juxtaposes on the level of form Homeric similes and similes in modern oral poetries. Three points of similarity stand out: length and duration require a brief discussion whereas the third, arrangement, is explored in more detail. The chapter ends by looking at similarities and differences regarding the matter of position. This chapter also begins to introduce the reader to the abundance of similes found in modern oral traditional works.
