This paper offers a very short introduction to formal dialogue systems of the kind currently used in artificial intelligence and argumentation theory and applies them to some types of dialogue that are especially important in education. Persuasion dialogue is contrasted with deliberation dialogue. The fundamental problem of how to define relevance in such systems is briefly explained and discussed.
