Abstract

AbstractDuring a systematic survey for Phytophthora in forest and agricultural soils in Papua New Guinea, carried out in the 1970 s and 1980s, two Clade 5 species, identified as P. heveae and P. castaneae, were recovered. Subsequent genetic analysis of two of the isolates that had been identified as P. castaneae confirmed that these isolates were distinct and represented a new species, tentatively named Phytophthora sp. "novaeguineae", a nomen nudum as there is no formal description. Based on data collected during the systematic survey, the species is now formally described as P. novae‐guineae.
