Abstract

Magnesium alloys have high potential for applications in automotive and aerospace industries due to their formability characteristics and good mechanical properties. In this review an attempt is made to present past work done on magnesium alloys and the future scope. Some optimal parameters of formability of magnesium alloys in deep drawing and stretch forming are summarised. Formability behaviour of tailored welded blanks of magnesium alloys and the challenges encountered in LASER welding magnesium alloys are addressed. Optimization and simulation techniques used so far in the study of formability of magnesium alloys are highlighted. Significance of FEM based software ANSYS/LS-Dyna is outlined with the latest trends in modelling the formability tests. Some insights from literature are postulated for better understanding the further scope of research work in this domain.
