Abstract

Most companies considering the possibility of doing business internationally are at once intrigued as well as frightened. Intrigued and excited from the prospect of expanding the markets they now serve and a bit afraid because of having no prior experience in doing so. There are risks and costs associated with expanding a business internationally, so the realities need to be examined carefully up front. This discussion will focus initially on the development of a decision to pursue international business. Then, the main topic is addressed, i.e., ways to expand internationally, forms/structures an alliance or partnership can take and the implementation of such relationships. In this process, the author examines various mechanisms or devices available with which to gain entry into a foreign market. At the end of the day, international business expansion can be achieved effectively if handled properly...and both profits and fun can be realized. The author reviews briefly some key issues that need to be addressed preliminary to deciding an international business plan or choosing a strategic alliance partner. >
