That was the day I tucked my five-year-old son Sam into the red Honda CVCC, rolled down to the road to hawk my novel Donald Duk, and showed my son some cities and friends along I-5 to Seattle. The news over the radio was hard news. Wouldn't you know it?—I chose to drive off on the first day of Operation: Desert Storm. I explained Bush's Desert Storm to Sam as we drove past the rollercoaster at Six Flags amusement park.
