The O–O bond-forming step in the oxidation of water to dioxygen is the key to how nature converts solar energy into renewable fuel, yet remains not fully understood. A recent report in <i>Nature Chemistry</i> from Casadevall et al. features structural characterization of a catalytically relevant elusive peroxo intermediate.
