Abstract

On behalf of the Board of Trustees for the British Society for Nanomedicine and the Organising Committee, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all our delegates for the European Nanomedicine Meeting 2017 (ENM2017), being held in London on the 3rd and 4th of April 2017. This year of all years, we are very proud to be co-organising this meeting with our European friends and colleagues. A warm thanks to the European Technology Platform for Nanomedicine (ETPN), the French Society for Nanomedicine (SFNano), Deutsch Platform NanoBioMedizin, NANOMED Spain, NANOMEDNORTH and ENATRANS, for their help in creating what we feel is an exciting scientific programme. We hope to provide the highest quality meeting for networking and disseminating the latest developments in nanomedicine research. This year we have organised the programme around the different stages of nanomedicine development, from fundamental new technology developments, through preclinical studies and finishing with translational nanomedicine research and a look towards what the future holds. We also thank colleagues at the European Nanomedicine Characterisation Laboratory for integrating a dedicated session to the infrastructure, with a panel discussion to address the challenges of translation and regulation. Europe is contributing world-leading nanomedicine research in therapeutics, diagnostics and theranostics, and we are pleased to represent that research quality in these proceedings of the conference, as a published record in the Journal of Interdisciplinary Nanomedicine (JOIN). We are delighted to welcome delegates from across Europe, and we want to express our sincerest gratitude to all of you for supporting the meeting. I would also like to add a personal thanks to the Organising Committee for all their hard work and commitment to the meeting, as well as their efforts in review and selection of the submitted abstracts and programme development. With pre-emptive thanks to the Awards Committee for agreement to review the oral and poster presentations. Although this is only the second edition of the European Nanomedicine Meeting, we have been overwhelmed by the breadth and quality of the submitted research, which is presented in these proceedings. This is clear evidence of the world-leading role that Europe is playing in evolving this emerging area of medicine. We hope as many of the delegates as possible can join us at the ENM2017 Gala dinner, which is being held at the Crypt at the St Paul's Cathedral. Finally, I sincerely hope that the new friendships and collaborations that are born at ENM2017 in London this year will endure the inevitable strains of the coming years, and will serve to help keep Europe at the cutting edge of nanomedicine research for decades to come.
