Abstract

Various standardized measures are used to evaluate clinical status in bipolar disorder (BD), and application of these measures, particularly when applied longitudinally, can help to evaluate status or outcomes in patients who have a condition that is inherently dynamic. Knowledge of available standardized rating scales for the assessment of patients with BD can help clinicians and researchers to choose the most appropriate instruments for their specific needs. This chapter will discuss standardized rating scales that are specific to BD or general scales that are commonly used in the assessment of patients with BD. We will review published reports of standardized rating in BD mania and BD depression as well as clinical criteria that are based upon the use of standardized rating scales. The chapter includes a focus on selected instruments originally developed for use in populations with diagnoses other than BD that are commonly used in BD research studies, as well as use of rating scales in individuals with BD across the lifespan. Finally, the chapter will conclude with a summary of anticipated future directions in applications of rating scales in BD clinical trials and recommendations for future research.
