Abstract

In May 1952, the Canadian Journal of Microbiology published a special issue dedicated to Professor E. G. D. Murray of the occasion of his retirement from the Chair of Bacteriology and Immunology at McGill University. At that time the Journal was in its second year of publication and its editor was R. G. E. Murray. In the 32 years since that issue, R. G. E. Murray has become a scientist of the highest international reputation, and the Dean of Canadian microbiologists. His knowledge and expertise encompass a wide spectrum of activities, as a scientific editor, a teacher, an administrator, but most important as a researcher. Now, as a Professor Emeritus of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Western Ontario, Professor R. G. E. Murray continues to practice his science at all levels: clearly a labour of love. In view of this continuing involvement in Microbiology, and as a mark of our respect for his accomplishments so far, the Canadian Journal of Microbiology has dedicated this issue to his achievements. Two of Professor Murray's former students, Terry Beveridge (Guelph) and Bill Costerton (Calgary) have organized and edited this issue. To them go the Journal's sincerest thanks for the many hours required to bring this issue together. As Canadian scientists, each with an international reputation, their efforts are a sincere tribute to their former mentor. This special issue also owes a debt of gratitude to the Section Editors: Bill Chesbro, Gerry Hazelbauer, and Noel Kreig who organized the individual sections. That they gave so generously of their time from busy schedules reflects the affection and regard of the international microbiology community for Bob Murray. We also thank the individual contributors: their willingness to become involved in this appreciation is a sincere token of esteem.
