Abstract

The low and midlatitude thermosphere and ionosphere constitute a tightly coupled dynamic region of the near‐Earth environment. This region exhibits strong and complex coupling between charged and neutral species, between different altitudes, and between equatorial and nonequatorial latitudes. The ion and neutral composition and temperature are affected by dynamics, electric and magnetic fields, photochemistry, and geomagnetic and solar forcing. This special section focuses on this region and the remote sensing techniques that are providing the measurements needed to better understand this complex region of the near‐Earth space environment.
