Abstract
SOMED is dedicated to providing a forum for the exchange of scientific information on microbial ecology as it relates to both health and disease of humans. Within this broad mandate, topics as varied as oral vaccines, inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). probiotics and bacterial toxins are often discussed. One of the most important functions of SOMED is to organise an annual meeting at which new information may be presented. In addition, this meeting allows scientists from different disciplines and a variety of geographic locations to share ideas. The programme of our last meeting (see issue 5(6) for published abstracts) illustrates the diversity of interests within the field of microbial ecology. On one hand. we heard a great deal about the possible biologic effects of lactobacilli as a probiotic agent, while on the other hand we learned more about the use of ribosomal RNA probes as a technique for identifying and categorising bacteria. On a more traditional note, we were updated about the toxins of Clostrjdjum dificile and brought up-to-date on the latest work in the area of IBD. It is a credit to this society that such different topics were accommodated within a single annual meeting.
