Abstract

An 18-month investigation of reactor sites and nuclear waste cemeteries, along with interviews and a review of documents enables the authors to document governmental/corporate disregard or mishandling of the waste disposal issue over a period of 40 years. Recent federal attempts to dump the repository problem back onto the states have ended in political impasse. One instance alone (the hot Barnwell breeder-reactor in South Carolina) reveals how corporate profits and losses may influence the politics of nuclear waste. The book expands a series of previously published newspaper articles. 64 references, 23 figures, 15 tables.
