Abstract
Successful forest pest managers must integrate complex technical considerations with important social and political concerns. Forest managers well trained in silviculture or entomology may be prepared for the biological challenges, but they may not be prepared for the sociopolitics. Sociopolitics influences all aspects of forest pest management. Because decisions are based on incomplete information, the outcome of projects has implications for its participants, judgements by agencies, scientists and technicians can be as biased as are those of politicians and interest groups. This paper discusses how sociopolitics influence forest pest management.
