Abstract

Abstract Pollen analysis of two sites in the swamps around Lake Poukawa shows that deforestation began just before 1 000 yr BP. Charcoal fragments found in the swamp sediments indicate that deforestation was caused by fires which probably resulted from Polynesian settlement.
