Abstract

Detailed annual assessments of forest condition in the UK have enabled the development of a comprehensive picture of the state of the country's trees. Although the trees have been scored as having thinner crowns than those in many other European countries, prompting speculation that they are affected by air pollution, a number of important differences exist between UK trees and those in central Europe. Surveys of tree condition have provided no indication that forest trees in the UK are being adversely affected by air pollution, nor is there any evidence at the current time that the condition of forests in the UK is declining.
