Abstract

We analyzed the interdependency between forest land conversion and economic land use in Brazilian Legal Amazon (BLA) from 2006 to 2017. More specifically, we assessed incremental economic gains from forest conversion in the perspective of environmental efficiency, and we analyzed the causes and implications of the interdependence based on a Forest Transition framework. Results suggested that despite land conversion being the least profitable production factor, the intensification of deforestation is expected in the future, especially at inner BLA. Specific geographic regions in BLA are significantly heterogeneous and associated with different phases of forest transition across the analyzed period.
