Abstract

The field of forensic psychology, while relatively new, has developed rapidly over the past several decades. The first decade of the 21st century has included some very significant developments in the field, including recognition by APA of forensic psychology as a specialty, the development of training and education guidelines for forensic psychology, and a revision of the Specialty Guidelines for Forensic Psychologists. Forensic psychology has thus matured into a distinct area with specialized knowledge and skill bases. This chapter describes the current state of the field of psychology and law. It begins with a brief overview of the development of the field, and then broadly describes the domains of practice in both legal psychology and forensic psychology. Models of training at all levels (graduate, internship, postdoctoral, and continuing education) are described. In addition, the process and value of obtaining ABPP board certification in forensic psychology are discussed.
